These small chips make the packing more dense. I mixed some pellets that I was cooking with in with the chips (to be sure they continued to burn) and loaded them into the tube. That produced a good smoke with manageable ash. I do believe I picked up additional positive smoke flavor with these bourbon chips but I'll be trying it on other cooks to be sure.
