Q: can I use this to detect a flame?

I have never tried it, but I am going to guess no. This sensor is used so that the remote control can connect with the robot.

Q: does it detect distance?

No, it receives IR signals(like from a remote control). You want the ultrasonic sensor to detect distance.

Q: Can this sensor be controlled by ir speed remote control 8879 (and not by the beacon)?

It will not work with the 8879, sorry!

Q: can I use thise wih 45544 and 31313

Yes this item is compatible with both sets. The main difference between the sets is the pieces included.
