It took me a while to realise what the arrow on the handle was for, so I learned the hard way! I keep mine in the fridge, so the coffee stays fresh. The skinny brown strip you see at the base is a lid, just in case there are any stray grounds. Mine has been problem free and fully functioning in the 3 or so years I've owned it - I haven't experienced any of the problems that other reviewers have mentioned here. It fits perfectly and gives you the right amount of coffee. It's also very easy to clean because every single piece is detachable and hence it can be cleaned fine.
