Review: which is a good thing. My family has problems with skin sensitivity ... - I switched to washing my clothes in NaturOli Soap Nuts/Soap Berries almost a year ago and I never want to go back to regular detergents again. This is the cheapest and easiest way to help reduce the amount of chemical exposure to you and your family. My clothes are always clean. And though the berries themselves have a slightly vinegary smell to them that smell doesn't transfer to your clothes, your clothes end up not smelling at all, which is a good thing. My family has problems with skin sensitivity and we have had no issues at all, it's gotten rid of all of the skin issues we have had with regular detergents. Plus the pieces are such a bargain! And the bonus is that most of them aren't even pieces, it's just halves which is easy to add up to a while berry for washing. I add a total of 5 berries to the wash bag that is provided and simply throw it in the wash. You can tell they are used up when the berries seem to be soft and squishy and their color beings to dull, it's usually about 5 washes for me. I don't follow up with any fabric softeners I use wool dryer balls and have great results. I have boiled them to make a concentrated liquid to use for other cleaning purposes (stain treatment, carpet cleaner, general household cleaner) and I am very impressed with this as well. It isn't difficult to do and I am glad to have a cheap and easy alternative for natural cleaning around the house. For the price and versatility I definitely recommend this product.
Review: Easy way to make soap nut liquid - For over a year, I have used soap nuts for almost all my cleaning needs - shampoo, bath wash, dish soap, and laundry. It feels great to know I can clean and still honor the earth's ecology. I use these soap nut pieces to create a liquid because I find the liquid is more convenient and makes less of a mess in the washer. I find the pieces, rather than the whole nuts, are easier to use when making a liquid. At first, I followed directions and boiled the soap nuts in water and then strained the liquid. More recently, I dispensed with boiling them. It seems to work just fine to let them soak in a quart mason jar for a few days, shaking it regularly, before straining the liquid. It uses less electricity and is easier too. There's some soap left in the nuts afterward which I use for dish soap by adding some water, briefly stirring, and then pouring the liquid into the dishwater. When the nuts no longer produce enough soap, they can be composted. I'm happy with using the liquid from these pieces for everything except shampoo. For some reason that I don't understand, I like using Naturoli's Extreme 18X liquid instead. I dilute it with water (1-1.5 tsp/8 oz water). It lathers much better and my hair is cleaner and softer. It took a while before I was happy with the results when washing my hair with Extreme 18X - months even. The only explanation I have is that there was build-up from previous shampoos and conditioners and/or the oil glands in my scalp needed to adjust. I'm glad I didn't give up because I'm happy with the results now. I have long hair and have had to use conditioner all my life - until now. Now, I wash once or twice a week and don't use conditioner. Before, when I used conditioner, it was because my hair was almost impossible to comb out without it and because the ends would get dry. Using Extreme 18X, it's no problem at all to comb. The ends are still drier than ideal though. I haven't figured out the solution to that yet. If I use the conditioner I used to use, Extreme 18X can't wash it out and it turns into a sticky mess. One thing I wish as different about the pieces is that they come in a plastic bag. I wish they came in a cloth one like the whole nuts. It's been a fun experiment to try to make my life more environmentally-friendly. Figuring out how to use soap nuts has been part of the fun. Blessings on your earth-friendly efforts. Together, we make a difference. Case-in-point -> The 2020 shutdown cleared the skies : )

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I haven't used washing powder or liquid, or fabric softener since i bought these.
*by D***D on December 6, 2015*

edit for 07//2016 These work so well that I've now bought Soapberry tree saplings to plant. They really do work great! Really good stain removal on adult clothes, with a quarter dose of bleach for whites the stuff gleams. It doesn't have a smell. it smells like cloth when it comes out of the dryer. I will use these until science comes up with something better. Original. Came with a small bag, which seems to work fine in my high capacity washer. I haven't used washing powder or liquid, or fabric softener since i bought these. We're homesteaders that have a low capacity sewage treatment plant, so we have an HE washer to reduce load on our plant. I've been searching for a soap that wouldn't harm animals or dirt if i decided to just drain the washer to a small trench behind the house... and found these soap berries. I do the 6-8 whole pieces in the bag, and that lasts for a week's worth of laundry. I replace the berries when the bag is squishy after the spin cycle, normally they're still a little firm if they're still good. Since we wait to do laundry, the towels and sweaty shirts smell pretty bad before they get into the machine... and they come out smelling like clean fabric, every time, regardless of water temperature. We used to use All Free and Clear, and clothes would come out not smelling very good from time to time depending on how long clothes sat in the hamper. It's really cool to put a couple of halves / pieces into a cup and fill it with hot water, it suds up immediately! We haven't tried washing our dog with it yet, or anything other than laundry, but it works great in the HE washer on all cycles, even with bleach! Don't hesitate. I can see a pound of these lasting way more than a year in our household where we do ~5 large loads a week. If you have any questions i'll answer them as i get them.
