Our Fresnel Lens Fire Starter is small, flat, light and inexpensive. Some practice is required and of course, one needs a sunny day for it to work. We do not recommend the Fresnel Lens as a primary fire starting tool, but as an addition to an already supplied kit. The Fresnel Lens Fire Starter, or Credit Card Magnifier, is so inexpensive why not carry a few just in case. The Best Glide ASE Fresnel Lens Fire Starter is more commonly known as a credit card magnifier. However, our version has 4 power magnification, much more than the 2X or 3X of standard credit card magnifiers, making it a great magnifier fire starter. The Best Glide ASE Fresnel Lens has been used for years in various applications, most notably the Light House Lens. Using a Fresnel Lens allows the light of the light house to be magnified numerous times and still be relatively small. It is a truly amazing invention. The Best Glide ASE Fresnel Lens is made of Optical PVS and is .4mm think and weighs 5.5 grams. In short, it is the size of a very thin credit card. The Fresnel Lens Fire Starter comes with a green, red, or yellow protective case with the Best Glide ASE Logo. Please note: These fresnel lenses are made of Optical PVC. However, there may be trace amounts of Diisononyl Phthalate (DiNP), which may require warning labels pursuant to California's Proposition 65. This labeling is only relevant to California. If you only have sticks, twigs, etc. and a match or lighter is a 10 and using two stick to create friction is a 1, then these around 5. This fresnel will quickly blacken paper but you don't get a flame. You have to create an ember and then use skill, angle, the right tinder and lots of patience to get a fire. I compared these to a 4 inch magnifying glass and the glass was twice as good and easier to focus. I was using various combinations of cotton ball, jute fibers, various cardboard, and dry pine needles. I actually got a fire with the magnifying glass, but I never could duplicate with this fresnel. Note that the 4 inch magnifying glass has 12.6 in2 and these have about 4.8 in2 and the magnifying glass focuses much better. The image quality on these is marginal compared to other larger ones I have, but these do work as a pocket magnifier for reading. **Q: will these fit in a altoids tin?** A: Nope. One of these will not fit in an Altoids tin unless you remove the lens from its plastic sleeve and then trim the edges to make it smaller. **Q: Anyone know the magnification power of these lenses; ie 5X, 10X... ???** A: ยท Magnifies up to 4x according to info from ; http://officesupplyonsale.com/item/az/uk0ib00nwm/3-pack-credit-card-size-pocket-fresnel-lens-magnifier-lenses-for-fire-starting ; also on the amazon page ! **Q: Are these unbreakable** A: Nothing is unbreakable ... even Kryptonite was stronger than SuperMan. They are made of a strong, yet flexible plastic that is slightly thinner than a credit card, and a little less durable than a credit card. They are strong enough for the service for which they are intended, and priced accordingly. They will start a fire on a sunny day.
