The blade is 1066 high carbon steel, and is plenty robust with a tang going all the way to end of the handle. It fits the hand well. It came razor sharp from the box and it stays sharp. I cut a 1 inch diameter stick to a sharp point and it was still razor sharp. The sheath with included ferro rod is well designed for fit and function. I would pick this knife for most outings. The only con is the 1066 steel will rust, so keep it clean and oiled. If stored in leather sheath it may rust, so oil the blade, always keep it oiled. To store long term, oil it, then protect the edge from cutting and store in a box OUTSIDE the sheath. I make temporary scabbards from a box with duct tape.
