I as also keen to explore some options such as Home Automation running as a VM or Docker container. Finally, Synology's DSM 7.0 was the final version that supports the DS215J and I felt uncomfortable running an unsupported OS/hardware setup.. Having a background in IT, I knew the importance of caching and this led me to the DS224+. I was able to add 8Gb RAM and the installation (via the removable front panel was a breeze). File accesses are now much faster (e.g. refreshing thumbnails of a folder of 50 images is approx 4-5x faster). The other compelling factor is the ultra-low power consumption; hard to believe that it's the same as an LED light bulb and even lower on stand-by. Does it have a firewall and anti-virus software?** A: The DSM software come with a number of features to prevent malicious attacks. One of my units was hit with a ransomware attack. Nothing import on the unit as it was used for security camera video storage. I believe I was hit with what is called man in the middle hack. My credentials were taken when I periodically logged in to view the camera images. I was not taking the security seriously. Now I have turned on HTTPS and 2FA (two factor authentication). Point is that the features are there to secure you NAS but you have to make use of them. Hope this helps. **Q: Can i put an 8tb m.2 in the m.2 slot** A: No. The M.2 is for cache only and limited to 2GB each NVMe. WARNING- it is very picky for NVMe's. I tried it with WD and Samsung and they burned out within 6 months. Synology sells NVMe's that they make and I would recommend. I don't like being stuck to the MFG drives, but they work. Just based on personal experience. Synology 920+ (8GB Ram, 4 x 16tb Seagate Exos X16) **Q: how much storage space come with this device?** A: None. You need to buy hard drives **Q: would this unit support a NVME cache module?** A: Yes the Synology DS1522+ supports 2 of the NVMe M.2's in mirror (RAID1) for write-back cache, or just 1 of them for read-only cache. (You cannot force it to use 1 of them for read-write). Starting with the year 2022 models, as of date of this review October 2022, Synology no longer lists as compatible any drive except their own brand (vendor-lock). However, if you look at the prior version of this unit Synology 1520+, you'll see other options that DO work like certain Seagate m.2 Ironwolf (but not all of them).. Unfortunately, the Synology DSM 7.1 in these newer 2022 models will currently show a warning anything except their own brand of drives may not support all features and compatibility is not guaranteed either. Big difference from the old one as this has the Intel Chip with built in graphics, so will transcode video in different formats depending on device being used to view content. Runs Plex server brilliantly. Was going to try a different manufacturer this time, but decided to stick with synology. Thier operating system (DSM OS) is flawless.
