## Description

Fels Naptha Dial Laundry Soap, Multi

Review: CRAZY AWESOME - TLDR: best stain remover I have ever used & one of the best purchases I’ve made. I rinse, wash with this bar, rinse again, then throw in washer & do my usual laundry routine. For severe stains - rinse, wash, rinse, then cover stain (both sides) with ample soap from the bar, then throw in washer without rinsing & follow laundry routine. Hasn’t failed me yet! ***TRIGGER WARNING*** —> women’s issues & bodily fluids discussed It took me a while to really try this bar out — I didn’t have anything to dry it on & I can’t stand the goopy bottom when soap bars dry on something completely flat. (I still don’t have anything “proper” to dry it on, but it actually doesn’t get goopy anyway!!). I got this bar to deal with menstrual stains. I have an irregular cycle & extreme bleeding (the kind that severely impacts my life … like I can’t even exit the shower “normally” for at least 8 days every month). I tend to use “disposable period panties” (“adult underwear” for periods) most of the time, but I always get caught off guard with a huge gush from Niagara Falls when it starts. So I needed a GOOD stain remover for my underwear, pants/jeans, socks, pajamas, jackets, bedding, couch covers, etc. Basically for anything that could be near my crotch or under my crotch while standing up is fair game. And allll the stain removers in the laundry aisle don’t work for my problem (oxi clean works great for my kids clothes tho). Enter this laundry bar. I got the tiny one from The Laundress at the same time — it did nothing my laundry soap couldn’t do. I have 2 super special needs kids & 2 less special needs kids, so I don’t have a lot of spare time to do stuff just for me (like hand washing stains from my clothes when they happen, or even doing my laundry when it happens). Sometimes my stuff just has to wait until all the other laundry is done (clothes, towels, bedding for 6 people is a LOT). Even when my stains have sat for 5 days (waiting for Friday night “free time”) it STILL comes out!! I rinse as much out as I can, then wash the area with soap from the bar. Sometimes I wash more than once, depending on how bad the stain is & how much of it I can rinse out before washing. I’ll do a final rinse & then throw it in the washer doing my normal routine. If the stain is really bad, I don’t rinse the soap out. I’ll wash it as much as I can, rinse it out & wring excess water; then load both sides of the stain with ample soap & leave it on to throw it in the wash like that. It hasn’t discolored anything I’ve used it on (or washed it with), doesn’t change the texture & the scent washes out too. I can’t really remember what it smells like — but I’m super sensitive to smell (I still use my face mask in stores bc other people’s perfumes & cologne make me nauseous from feeling like there’s an ice pick in my head) & this doesn’t bother me at all. I know it smells like flowery soap or something but it isn’t overpowering & doesn’t give me a headache like most things. The Laundress bar smells weird, like men’s cologne (& not a good one either). This bar is absolutely amazing & has not failed me yet!!! While I’m hand washing, the stain doesn’t always fully come out. I’ll be bummed thinking I ruined my clothes, but then the remaining stains come out in the wash (I have an he top loader with no agitator). I don’t know if running it through a delicate cycle will be enough, but I always use cold water & low heat in the dryer to extend the life of my clothes.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this a natural bar soap? I"m thinking no since it's made by Purex, a company that uses chemicals in its cleaning supplies.**
A: Fels-Naptha soap contains sodium tallowate and sodium cocoate or sodium palmate kernelate and sodium palmate. Sodium hydroxide is the lye used to make soap with tallow, coconut oil, palm oil or palm kernel oil. It also contains water and talc. Coconut acid, palm acid and tallow acid are fatty acid emollient and surfactant cleaning agents from plants and animals. PEG-6 methyl ether is an extract of juniper. Fels-Naptha also contains glycerin, an emollient; sorbitol, a sugar alcohol derived from fruits, corn and seaweed, a moisturizer; and sodium chloride, ordinary table salt. Pentasodium pentetate and/or tetra-sodium etidronate are inorganic salts used as emulsifiers and dispersing agents. Titanium dioxide is an opaque white pigment. The soap also contains fragrance, source not specified and acid orange and acid yellow colors. Fels-Naptha contains solvents that dissolve greasy stains, including oil, grease, perspiration, chocolate, baby formula and cosmetics. The wet bar is rubbed into stains before putting clothes into the washing machine or grate about one-third of an ounce of the bar into the washing machine as a detergent booster. It has been used as a folk remedy for contact dermatitis caused by exposure to poison ivy, poison oak and other skin irritants, but the Dial company warns that Fels-Naptha should not be used directly on your skin.Considerations: Some of the ingredients in Fels-Naptha are of concern, such as titanium dioxide, which is known to contaminate the ocean and lakes and harm wildlife. According to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Fels-Naptha is safe for consumer use in the laundry, but the MSDS warns about occupational hazards, and those working with Fels-Naptha soap in industrial settings are required to wear safety gear including goggles and gloves because it is an irritant. What is Naphtha?Naphtha is the name for a petroleum derived solvent, and includes such solvents as gasoline and kerosene. Originally Fels-Naptha contained benzene, another name for naphtha, which dissolves oil and so is very useful for oily stains. This ingredient is what made Fels-Naptha such a success, making it possible for homemakers to get their laundry cleaner with less effort. However, Fels-Naptha no longer contains benzene.http://www.livestrong.com/article/176905-information-on-fels-naptha-soap/

**Q: How do you grate this for your homemade detergent. It seems very hard... have you tried a food processor or just hand graters?**
A: I just use a serrated knife (in my case a steak knife) to grate against the edge of the bar and shave off bits of the soap. It will look like coarse powder.

**Q: I want to use this to make laundry detergent. Does it have a smell? Is it pleasant?**
A: Yes there is, but by the time you make detergent with it it's pretty faint. It's a clean smell. Not a beautiful floral smell or anything, just kinda clean kinda old fashioned smelling too if that makes any sense? But for me when I make my liquid detergent with it, I barely smell it anymore anyways. If you want more of a smell to your clothes after you wash them, you'll probably want to add some essential oils or use a fabric softner of your choice. Hope that helps.

**Q: How well does this work on old stains?**
A: It depends on how old the stain is. If it's an old rust stain, it will get some of it but not all of it. Old protein based stains like blood it takes some scrubbing but it will get it out.
