I am using this saw and another on the job, it is performing very well in this application. **Q: Why is the blade tapered in width?** A: Because these saws cut on the pull, the taper helps the teeth naturally dig in more aggressively with less down pressure. **Q: Are the sides marked so as to know which blade to do cross cuts and which side to use for rips?** A: Don't need marking. Course teeth for rip and fine teeth for crosscut. **Q: Is the blade sharpenable?** A: Not sharpenable, the steel on these saws is quite thin (due to the fact it is a “pull” saw). It cuts on the pull stroke not the push stroke (like most tradition western style saws) This allows a very thin kerf and quite fine saw set. The steel quality is excellent, so they hold an edge for a very long time. If it had very heavy use daily use and you found it blunt, usually you replace the blade rather than sharpen this style of saw. It seems to saw cleanly just about any type of wood with ease.
