    Better Than the Show

*by J***K on Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017*

A.K. Benedict's novel, The Stone House, is better written (it's often poetic) than it has any right to be and rather significantly develops the characters. The premise is fresh. So far as Doctor Who tie-in fiction goes, this is quite excellent. We'd live in a better world if Benedict--and her fellow tie-in authors--had written for the show.

    Even monsters have nightmares

*by A***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2016*

‘The Stone House’ takes the set up and regulars of ‘Class’ and transposes them into a ‘school kids investigate a haunted house’ scenario. In some ways it is an original approach for the format to move it out of Coal Hill School and place the characters in a different setting. However, it doesn’t entirely work. Most of the regulars are a bit too old to fit into the haunted house trope so the novel therefore focusses primarily upon Tanya as she is a few years younger. By the latter stages of the story most of the regulars have been pushed to one side and practically left out of events. It is then Quill who joins Tanya centre stage to investigate the sightings in the Stone House.Alongside Quill and Tanya, the other major character of the story is Amira. It is Amira and her tragic situation that becomes the linchpin of the story. Several chapters come from her perspective and this works in good contrast to the slightly more cavalier outlooks of the others. Her situation also parallels well with that of the alien, inadvertently deferring sympathy upon it due to the similarities between their plights. The main problem with the whole haunted house scenario is that the author fails to create the type of creepy or suspenseful atmosphere you would expect from a story concerning such a subject. The whole alien reveal/revelation is also rather weak and inevitably expected. However, it does work well to have an alien as a figure of sympathy as its parenting problems invite comparison with those of some of the regular characters.Although there are strong themes of loss, detachment and deprivation there is also loosely contained within the story an element of corporate versus the individual. What’s more, Constantine Oliver is really the villain of the novel, even though this is in the way of being portrayed as a kind of stereotypical uncaring capitalist, as well as a good foil for Quill to clash with.

My second-favourite of the three "Class" books.

*by J***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2017*

"The Stone House" is pretty good (but the monster reminds me a little too much of the monster in "Hide" (from 'Doctor Who' series 7)."Joyride" is my favourite of the 3 "Class" books, 5 out of 5. A ripping yarn and brilliantly told."What She Does Next..." is a bit of a lukewarm 3 out of 5 for me - see my review for it.
