Mostly the software side that everyone complained about. When I first looked into buying the BC-1500 I noticed a lot of complaints about pairing and software. There weren’t many reviews on the accuracy or comparison. Setting up the scale is super easy if you are patient enough to read and use a little common sense. When you download the software (only download the healthy edge light installer no extra drivers or anything else) it is a “zip” file and must be extracted (extraction is automatic and needs no additional software). Once you open up the folder containing the files most people will click on the “healthy edge” software installer. This is the wrong thing to do. There is a second installer needed first in the folder. The sql database installer must be used first and it will start a chain of installers for you. The database, the program healthy edge and the ANT driver will all be installed. Do not install the ANT usb device until after all software is loaded. Restart your system and follow the pairing instructions. Tanita did not include good instructions on setup so hopefully my install instructions will help a little. The analyzer…… I used four units (smart scales and body composition analyzers) to compare as well as a caliper technique. I used a garmin s2, inbody h20n, inbody rd-901 and the bc-1500 pro. I wanted to keep them under $600 for home use. After comparing all of them the bc-1500 produced the most consistent numbers as well closest accuracy to caliper and water tests. The software offers segmental analysis to provide targeted information. Overall this unit was better at everything and unless you are going to spend over 5k I don’t think you’ll find anything better. I think it all comes down to not knowing who they're marketing to. The scale generates a lot of data, when it works. Sometimes I have to remeasure five times or more to get a reading with anything more than weight, but when it works, it makes a lot of numbers. In fact, I call it my random number generator because if you don't like the result you can just measure again for an entirely different set. For example, it will give a reading that says my muscle mass is fluctuating 4-5lb in a two day period, either up or down. The quantity of numbers generated definitely appeal to bio-metric data geeks, but you can't export the data so... good luck with doing anything with them. This flaw can be remedied with the purchase of nearly $500 in additional software to set it up for clinical use which turns on the export feature. In the meantime, you can't get the data out where you can work with it or even get a graph they didn't preprogram. If you replace your phone, your data is off the phone permanently. With the data stuck on your phone in the meantime, good luck correlating it with anything else. It also is VERY poor at connecting, and it never would connect to an different ANT+ measuring interface from the Android store. The Healthy Edge Lite software also frequently forgets the scale configuration, and you have to go flip the scale over to get the serial number and reinstall the scale in the software. I talked with their customer support, which is actually good, and they speculated that the scale may be broken. Unfortunately, there is only a 90 day warranty, so they wash their hands of it pretty quickly. Did I mention that this system has VERY poor integration into the larger cloud ecosystem? My iHealth scale sends my data all over the place to update stats and calculations such as calorie burn. This one? Not so much. NOTE: I did get the data exported. All you have to do is plunk down your $500 for the random number generator, buy the third party ANT+ interface for your phone and have your measurements sent to email, forward the measurement emails to a cloud bot to scrape the data out, then import it into a cloud based spreadsheet. Then Voila! I'm being sarcastic.
