It is best to start on the chanter, then when ready, purchase a good set of bag pipes which you attach your chanter to. It is recommended to wear ear protection when the whole set of bagpipes is being played indoors, protection is not needed for the chanter itself. This is a beautiful chanter set. **Q: What songs are in the book?** A: The first half of the book teaches how to play the chanter. The 2nd half has about 15-20 different songs, starting with easier songs to learn and progressing to harder ones. There are also online tutorials to help learn the notes and embellishments. Regards. If you require a long length chanter I recommend the Frazer Warnock Long chanter **Q: Is this a good size for a child (age 9)? Thank you.** A: Thanks for your question. My son is a big 8 year old (almost 9) and he has a child's chanter. The full size chanter will probably be too big. The problem is the player's pads of their fingers need to be flat over the holes and with a chanter that is too big the child can't reach the last hole for their pinky finger. Personally I'd recommend a child's chanter, they may outgrow it in a year or two but at least they won't develop bad habits in that first year. I hope this helps. Ordered and received this Twist Trap promptly. The reeds and instruction book were bonuses. Initially I found the Twist Trap sound somewhat less sharp than what I have been using but a change of reed corrected that. Watched the Youtube video which assisted me on taking the chanter apart as it is difficult to locate the screw separation. So far enjoying it and it is a somewhat shorter than my long chanter. It arrived quickly and in fact two weeks prior to the shipping date forecast by the seller/Amazon.
