Because the sensor is in a fixed location and the object blocking it can't be moved right now, I wanted to try a different sensor that would work better in this location. Enter the JESSINIE HLK-LD2410B-P. This tiny module was fairly easy to integrate into Home Assistant (you can use either ESP Home or the BLE integration - but as I found out, not both at the same time). I came across a few different 3D printed cases for this board and settled on the minimalist magnetic mount seen in the picture. The LD2410B is super compact, reasonably priced and highly configurable. Given the tight pin pitch, I really appreciate the per-soldered header and included data/power cable. I haven't yet tried to optimize my setup but I have confirmed it works well with the default settings.
