Providing your frequency is analog. A lot of police departments are now using digital . They are primarily used for two way communication. If you don’t have your amateur radio license. You can’t talk on some of the frequencies. There are some frequencies that you can transmit on this radio without a license. All in all this a great little radio. It has a wide range of uses. I have bought a lot of them. Hope I answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you need further assistance. Tom **Q: What's the model year?** A: I believe this model was manufactured in 2022. There is a newer version with not much change. Hope this helps. Tom **Q: Are these fcc approved?** A: The box is labeled "Professional FM Business Transceiver" and Appendix B lists transmit ranges as 144-148MHz and 420-450MHz. It says it is a FCC Part 15 device (may not cause harmful interference and must accept any interference it is subject to, similar to other radios sold to amateur use. These frequemcies align with FCC Part 97 restrictions for ITU Region 2. Rationalization time: A Part 97 licensed amatuer is allowed to build or modify equipment for use in the amatuer bands. **Q: Is this the 5w version or 8w version? Looks like 8w cause of the first pic has an H but description says only 2 power settings** A: According to my owners manual I got when ordering these radios, high power is 5W on VHF and 4W on UHF. For the low power, it is 2W. ## Frequently Bought Together - BAOFENG UV-5R Two Way Radio Handheld Ham Radio Dual Band Walkie Talkie (5R-2PACK) - BAOFENG UV-5R Battery 3800mAh USB-C Charging Extended Battery for UV5R BF-8HP UV-5R Series Radios High Capacity Battery with Type-C Charging Cable,2Pack - BAOFENG USB Programming Cable CH340 Chip Compatible with UV-5R BF-F8HP Pro 5RM UV-32 GMRS UV-5G Plus GM-15PRO GM21 K5PLUS AR-152 UV-21R Quansheng UV-K5 8 Ham Radio --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/538963874-baofeng-uv-5r-two-way-radio-handheld-ham-radio-dual](https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/538963874-baofeng-uv-5r-two-way-radio-handheld-ham-radio-dual) --- *Product available on Desertcart South Africa* *Store origin: ZA* *Last updated: 2026-10-04*
