It easily clips on to the downrigger weights and holds on very well. I clip my line about halfway in the jaws of the clip and drop it down to around 50 feet deep with a 6lb weight. I put a small amount of resistant on when I drop the weight but it still goes down pretty fast and the fishing line has never ripped off while descending. Trout are easily able to pull my line off even if they're on the smaller side. I use this for lake fishing and have only put my line in the first half of the clip. The jaws of the clip have a lot of grip to them and can handle a wide variety of fishing as long as you adjust your line accordingly. The length of the clip from the weight is longer than some but I do like this length. I have never had any tangle issues while using this product. Some of the smaller fish were not able to release the line, so I experimented with placing the line not so far back I the grip. That worked better but a couple times the line released before I got the lure down.
