## Description

Your life’s an adventure. To capture and keep its best moments, you need fast, high-capacity storage that accelerates every move. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD features up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds, letting you store your content and creations on a fast drive that fits seamlessly into your active lifestyle. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)

Review: Rugged, Compact, and Incredibly Fast External SSD - I picked up the SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD as an upgrade from my older external hard drives, and it’s easily one of the best storage devices I’ve used. The speed difference alone makes it worth it—transfers that used to take minutes on my traditional hard drives now finish in seconds. Large files, videos, photos, and backups move incredibly fast with no lag or stuttering. The size is another huge win. It’s unbelievably compact—smaller than most phones and light enough to clip onto a backpack or keep in a pocket without even noticing it’s there. Despite the small size, it feels durable and solid, with a rugged rubberized exterior that helps protect it from drops and everyday wear. Compared to traditional hard drives, there’s no spinning disk, no noise, and no worrying about bumps causing damage. It stays cool during most normal use and has been extremely reliable so far. I use it for work files, media storage, and backups, and it has handled everything without a single issue. A few small caveats worth mentioning: • It can get a little warm during long or heavy file transfers (not dangerously hot, just warm to the touch). • To get the full advertised speed, you need a USB-C port that supports USB 3.1/3.2 Gen 2. On older ports, it will still work fine but will be slower. • Like most SSDs, it’s pricier than traditional external hard drives, but the speed and portability make the difference worth it. • The included cable is on the shorter side, so you might want a longer one depending on your setup. Overall, this SanDisk Extreme SSD is a huge step up from regular external drives—faster, smaller, tougher, and much more convenient. If you need a dependable portable drive with great performance, this one is absolutely worth it.
Review: Excellent storage - I got this to hold my music library for my home server. I have been using it for about a month now and I liked it enough that I bought a second one. Transfers move quickly enough that loading the library over was not something I had to sit and wait on. It stays connected without dropping or needing to be reseated. The drive is small enough to sit next to the server without taking up any real space and it doesn't get warm to the touch. The rubberized body feels solid and the carabiner loop is there if you want to clip it to something, though mine just stays put. I didn't bother with the included software. Both of them have been running without a hiccup and I have no complaints.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how much faster is this than an external HDD?**
A: With an SSD over HDD, you're obviously paying for the increase in speed. Nobody actually answered your question of "how much faster." Even though it's been over a year now, maybe it will help someone else. A typical portable HDD speed seems to be about 120 Mbps, whereas this drive claims 1,050 MBps read and 1,000 write. So about 8 or 9 times faster.

Also, it is pretty fast relative to other portable SSDs. 1 GBps seems to be about the standard right now for drives in this price range. The T7 quotes the same speed, from what I can tell. Definitely not "3-4x" faster. The X5 quotes twice the speed (at twice the price).

**Q: How to get the full 1000 mb/s? only getting about 800 mb/s write and 700 mb/s read. plugged directly into a macbook air m1 (2020). blackmagic test**
A: The numbers quoted are for the raw data rate - how fast the drive can accept bits. You will never see this in real life. Some factors affecting real-world performance include:

* File system overhead. Your file system (whether FAT, NTFS, HFS, APFS, ext or anything else) has overhead. This overhad consumes bandwidth, but you won't see it in a benchmark that only measures the data used by your files.
* Your testing application may not be getting enough CPU cycles or USB bandwidth to be able to push data at the device's maximum speed. Testing labs use a computer with a specialized operating system that can ensure sufficient bandwidth, but an app running on a normal operating system can't make such a guarantee.

**Q: It's not showing up on my ntfs for mac but is in finder. also keeps asking me to authenticate in order to do anything with it?**
A: Ntsf is a windows format. A Mac will not write to it natively. You will need to get 3rd party software like Paragon or another to fully work with a ntsf formatted hard drive on a Mac. Format it to apfs if it is only going to be used on a Mac or buy ntfs for Mac software if you need to go back and forth.

**Q: Can I use this as an additional storage *continuously* connected to my mac? any overuse or overheat issues?**
A: Since my poor MacBook Pro 2016 has gotten slower because I refuse to update the OS (because I know what would happen), I started using my 2TB 1050mbps SSD Sandisc external drive for my heavy video editing and music production projects and it flies without any problem. I would say though that it is true that at some point it gets quite hot but nothing’s affected it’s performance. My advise is just connect it when you need it and that’s it. I love this little friend!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not For Use With An iPhone 11
*by J***X on July 27, 2021*

This is a review of the SanDisk Portable Extreme 1TB SSD Hard Drive This Solid State Drive (SSD) is really tiny, and very lightweight. It’s pre-formatted to exFAT, which works with both MAC and Windows. Unfortunately, it DOES NOT WORK WITH the iPhone 11 Pro, which is what I bought it for. I read a bunch of great Amazon reviews, as well as YouTube reviews and videos. The one or two reviews I missed were the one’s that said this SSD is not compatible with the iPhone 11 Pro. I tried using it in conjunction with an non-Apple lightning to USB 3 camera adapter. When that didn’t work, I purchased an Apple lightning USB 3 camera adapter. The adapter has a built-in lightning cable, to attach it to the iPhone or iPod, and on the back side there’s a lightning port. This port can be used to connect the adapter to either a DC or portable external power supply. It also has a USB 3 port, that can be used to attach a camera, or other device. Once I connected everything to the iPhone and powered up the external power supply, I received the message, “Cannot Use This Accessory Extreme 55AE: This accessory requires too much power,” and the iPhone would not recognize the SSD. I checked to confirm that it arrived pre-formatted to exFAT, and it had. I ended up chatting with two Apple technicians, and an Apple supervisor. I pointed out that there are a number of videos that demonstrate the “how to…” use the SanDisk (and other) SSD’s to copy files to and from the iPhone 11 to the SSD. The bottom line was that the Apple Techs’ insist that there is no way to use an external storage device with an iPhone, even by using their Lighting to USB 3 camera adapter. Now, I’m an old-timer, so there’s certainly the possibility that I’m just not sharp enough to figure out where I went wrong. But, what I am sharp enough to figure out is how easy it is to return this beautiful little SanDisk SSD to Amazon for a refund. Love dealing with Amazon, but that’s another story. Even though I returned this SSD for a refund, I’m giving it all five stars, because when I connected it to my Windows 10 laptop, it was instantly recognized. Since I purchased this SSD to work with my iPhone, not my laptop, and knowing that I would be returning it, I didn’t try to transfer any files to it. Would I recommend the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD to a friend? Only if my friend didn’t intend to use it to transfer files to or from their iPhone.
