Although this is a key feature, I'm nervous about blades. Besides being careful, is there a buffer tool?** A: I use a piece of PVC pipe, a coupler that is 1 5/8" longer with ID 3/4", and slip this over my thumb. I was nicking my thumb knuckle more than anything, and this has worked fine. Occasionally I do catch the plastic on the grater, probably not good for blades, but better than bloodying my thumb almost every time. **Q: Does this rust if you wash it in the dishwasher?** A: The harsh dishwasher detergents and the extreme boosted water heat will ruin the sharp edge of expensive knifes or this Box Grater. This is because it will etch the edge. Same reason most folks will never put their expensive China in their dishwasher. I hand wash these expensive things and they stay like new for years. **Q: What is the material of the handle and base?** A: Its a heavy, non slip plastic with a rubber (?) coating. I am a chef and this is thee best grater/zester I have ever used. The base is also plastic. Its removable and doubles as a ginger or garlic grater, but its handy to leave it attached when you are grating cheese or something messy.
