It's not the greatest conditioner either (slightly drying), but not the worst. So why give it 5 stars? It does keep my color red. I don't even use it every time I wash. I leave it on very wet hair for about 3 minutes. (The color is more vibrant in person than in my picture, but-- I last dyed it red 6 months ago. That's right, that's a 6 month old dye job, and still pretty freaking red.) Now, my Sally's conditioner did that too. But this one is superior in a couple of ways. 1, the color is brighter. 2, it's the least staining color conditioner I've ever used. My hands are 95% clean after I use it. Since it's not the best at conditioning, I mix it with some better conditioner. My own preference was just to keep it crayon red with as little work, time, and damage as possible. Oh, and I have medium brown roots that it stains a nice dark cherry. Don't expect miracles on virgin hair, this is meant as a refresh for dyed hair, but it does indeed deposit on virgin hair. And on gray hair.
