It's not going to do much with steam, as it will just get blown straight back into the room through the vent hole in the top. If you're fitting under a wall cupboard you're going to have to cut a hole in the bottom and top of the cupboard and duct the air through it out to the top of the cupboard back into the room. The key word in the title is 'extractor'. If it's an extractor, it's designed primarily to do just that, via a trunking to the outside. Without the external vent, it's just going to suck the steam in and blow it straight out again, whilst making a bit of a noise. You need to look for a recirculating cooker hood, not just an extractor. In addition to a grease filter, recirculators tend to have an activated charcoal filter in the vent hole which absorbs more of the smoke and odours but would not be especially good at absorbing steam. **Q: To use the external extraction do you need to buy a ducting kit? My extractor is not working and no fix in the near future. I got two just in case - I cook a lot iwith multiple pans. These are powerful, very cool looking, and the cleanup is not too bad. I love them! Adding a funny picture of smoky rashers - i did not actually need the second unit for the one pan. There is a fat/grease collection tray, but I think the filters work so well it's always empty. How do I know these are actually working? First, I can see smoke and steam moving directly into the unit. Second - smell test. I closed the kitchen after browning chicken in Lard for Adobo. Left the room for 10 minutes, came back it and.. it just smelled normal. No smoke haze anywhere.
