Today they are formulated from a series of soluble dyes in a superior shellac solution. All colors in the Winsor & Newton line of Drawing Inks are fully intermixable and they are easily diluted (with distilled water). I'm a watercolor/mixed media artist and like to add embellishments to some of my abstract art. I use metallic watercolor but sometimes that just isn't strong/bright enough. This Winsor & Newton Gold Drawing Ink fits the bill. The color is strong, has great coverage, and adds just enough "Wow" to my work. You have to remember to shake the bottle well before opening it to use, and I then use my paint brush to get the ink in the cap. I find this is usually just enough paint for what I'm doing, if not, I simply replace the lid and shake again. The ink washes out of my brush with water and can also be thinned with a small amount of water. I read in a review or two that the cap becomes "glued" to the bottle sometimes, To prevent this, using my finger, I carefully apply a very small amount of Vaseline around the outside of the neck of the bottle before screwing on the lid for the first time. I use this same hint on all my tubes of watercolor/acrylic/oil paint. There is plenty of ink in the bottle for me to use on many, many projects, but if and when I run out, I will order again. Martin's company about this one. They specifically recommend their Hydrus Liquid Watercolors for brush pens, stating that the Bombay Black would clog. While the Winsor and Newton Black inks have pros as well, including permanence and great handling, I'm not sure how they'd handle with the Brush Pens. I've been meaning to email them as well. **Q: Can I dip my pen in the bottle or do I need an inkwell?** A: Any dip pen can be loaded directly, but if you use an oblique pen holder it woul be better to use a broad mouth container or inkwell. **Q: Are these wells sealed against leakage?** A: Mine has not leaked at all so it should be just fine if your carrying it around somewhere it shouldn't leak at all as long as the top is twisted on tight **Q: can i use this for stick and poke tattoos?** A: I wouldn't. The formula of this ink is different than most India inks. It may tattoo fine, but It could be toxic or cause cancer over time.
