I cut pieces about 3 inches to secure my tomato plants. When I clean up my garden in the fall, I remove the velcro pieces then wrap them around the cage and store until the next season. I usually get at least three seasons of use from each piece. It is Velcro and will only stick to itself. You can wrap it around a metal trellis bar, but it will slide down unless there is something horizontal to stop it, or you use a short piece to tie a plant close to the trellis so that the plant will grow up the trellis instead of falling away from it, in which case the plant leaves or stems will keep it in place. **Q: Would this be good to attach orchids to a smooth palm tree?
