Restoring the data from my remote backup took around 12 days. Adding an additional disk to the array took around five days, which was disappointing given that this is supposed to be a higher-end Synology model. The overall setup process therefore, took well over two weeks. It is also worth noting that the DS1823xs+ does not support Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), even though many cheaper Synology models do. This reduces flexibility when expanding storage. Finally, while Synology now technically allows the use of non-Synology hard drives, the system marks them with red warnings and reports the overall system health as “Warning”, even when the drives are functioning perfectly. This makes the NAS appear to be in a fault state when it is not.
