Review: Brilliant for getting rid of Fungus Gnats in House Plants - Was recommended Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to put on top of my houseplants soil to stop Fungus Gnats I didn’t want to buy a huge amount of DE and the shaker with this works a treat How to apply: Make sure the top of the soil is totally dry then sprinkle on enough DE to totally cover the top of the soil to a reasonable depth Once you’ve applied DE do NOT water your indoor plants from above as it will just wash away the DE As long as your container has holes in the bottom water your plants from below… what I do is put a couple of inches of water in the sink and pop my plants in that water and allow a couple of hours for the plant to suck up what it needs Once you’ve left the plants in the water remove them and let them drain on the kitchen drainer for a while until totally drained otherwise there’s a risk of root rot. I always sprinkle liberally in the hen house, nest boxes and dust bath to prevent red mites. It feels like powder to us but to mites, fleas and ants it is really sharp and damages their joints, killing them (or sending them away in the case of ants so I found out when they were in my kitchen recently). I've not had mites yet but keep a light piece of towelling on the floor of their house where my hens sleep - they are rescues so won't roost- and in their nest boxes under the straw. I check the towelling every morning. Apparently if there are mites it's easier to spot on the towelling because it turns reddish. I hope this has helped. **Q: Is this product vegan?** A: I'm sorry I don't know but it worked really well on getting rid of mites for my chickens **Q: Will this get rid of ants?** A: Yes, I've used it outside (when it didn't rain), in the kitchen and in the living room when ants "invaded".
