    I still miss my Nexus

*by A***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2019*

My first tablet was the Google Nexus 7 from 2013. A brilliant tablet that I hung on to because it did everything I wanted.Sadly the time came for an update so I hunted around to see what there was. There isn't a great choice for those of us who want a 7"/8" tablet but after much reviewing I plumped for the Lenovo. The new tablet was easy to set up and I transferred over most of what I wanted from the old tablet. The screen was a noticable improvement and the tablet was an all round and good buy...even though technically it is already out of date. The downside - I had to get a seperate memory card to help it out .Would I buy it again - yes. A decent tablet at a sensible price for what I need.

    Excellent Piece of Kit

*by I***T on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 January 2019*

First off, a note about the seller, 'iclickuk'. I've left seller feedback, but I'll repeat what I said here. I researched several tablets and the associated sellers before plumping for this one, and found that many of the sellers had satisfaction levels of around 93% to 94%. In many cases the complaints were that the item was obviously originally manufactured for another country but had ended up in the UK, and boxes had been opened, presumably to change the charging unit to a UK one. Not so with 'iclickuk', who had a satisfaction level of 98%. The tablet was competetively priced, and I ordered it on one day and it arrived the next, as promised (in fact it arrived earlier in the day than is usually the case for this area - we're rather out in the sticks - but that was probably pot luck). The original Lenovo seals were still intact, and the entire box was shrink-wrapped in cellophane, which inspired confidence right from the start. So, if ever I need to buy any other kit of this general nature I will check whether 'iclickuk' actually sell it, and if they do I will almost certainly buy it from them. Can't fault them in any way.Now to the tablet itself. I have had an iPad Mini for several years and it has served me well, but it is starting to run slow. I decided it was time to look at replacement but was horrified at the price of new ones, and then there was the fact that Apple's control freakery has bugged me on a number of occasions over the years. I therefore looked at alternatives, and finally came up with the Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus. The first appealing thing was that it was half the price of a new iPad Mini, and after some research I decided to take the plunge. So far I've only had it a couple of days, and if anything changes I will have to update this review. But at present I can't fault it, though I did have a couple of minor scares when setting it up. I fired it up and started the logging on process, but when I got to the point of linking to our WiFi it stopped doing anything. After I entered the password it merely said 'saved' rather than 'connected' and wouldn't budge from that screen. So I followed the standard cure for all computer-related glitches, and simply switched it off and switched it back on again. This time it connected no problem. Then, while I was starting to do other things with it, it warned me there was a software update available, so I set it to download and install it. The download was 1608MB in size and it kept pausing for some reason so took an inordinately long time to complete, but eventually it got there and installed no problem. From that point on it has worked well.Incidentally, one reviewer had mentioned a tendency for the tablet to fry micro SD cards and recommended not inserting them until after any software updates had been carried out. I had already purchased a new 128GB card and followed that advice. The card is now in the machine and working perfectly. You get the option of formatting it either as internal or external memory - mine is formatted as external and does precisely what I need it to.I'm in my sixties and retired, and the tablet is really to be used instead of my laptop (which I've been using less and less as time goes on). I know tablets are not really a replacement for a fully-fledged laptop, but my requirements are now much less than they were and 99.9% of the time I can easily get by with just the tablet. It has 16GB of onboard memory, but the operating system uses up roughly half of that so you will only have about 8GB to play with. But of course you can expand that with a micro SD card - I believe the tablet will take one up to 128GB in size and, as mentioned above, that is what I have in it now. I downloaded the few apps I use (which include banking, Kindle, another e-reader for non-Kindle books, Google Sheets, Google Docs, a chess program and a few others), and I've now used up about 9.7GB of the internal memory. I'm not a gamer at all - I just play occasional chess, mah jongg, and su doku - so I have no knowledge or experience of how the tablet would perform with memory or processor-intensive games. I've downloaded lots of books, some music and some films to the SD card, which still has plenty of space left on it.The touch screen keyboard works perfectly well, but using it (either on tablet or phone) can be a bit of a pain if you're typing a long e-mail. I have a normal bluetooth keyboard that I use for those longer jobs, and it connected to the tablet quickly and easily. With the tablet in a case that can prop it up in a good display position (I have one on order - coming today), I can sit at the table and type longer documents in much the same way as I would on the laptop, but without the hassle of having to get the thing out of the bag and connect it all up. Very convenient. The screen on the tablet is very bright and crystal clear. It is also very responsive - the touch screen works well at one touch, and apps open quickly and smoothly. If the tablet has gone to sleep you can wake it up by simply double-tapping somewhere on the blank screen. Since the couple of tiny hiccups I had during setup, which weren't really much of a problem at all, it has worked like a dream and I am extremely happy with it. As I said, if that changes I will have to report again, but at present it's five stars all the way.

Great - but why the non-standard charge jack?

*by E***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2017*

Great little tablet with superb graphics: perfect as intended for 7 year old to play, view videos and interact with family members.Loses a star because Lenovo see fit not to use standard micro USB charger, which means having to remember to carry the supplied charger everywhere (and not losing it in amongst all the other detritus kids drag everywhere with them, of course) instead of just grabbing the nearest micro USB cable and charging.
