You either got lemons, which is not very common, or you do not understand how to store bread.This is Westphalian Pumpernickel bread, which is freshly baked bread that has been baked for about 24 hours at a low temperature in the oven, and packaged with reduced oxygen (and the process to make this able to be baked is arduously long). It does not store the exact same way toasting bread (which is what you will commonly see in American and British supermarkets) does, so of course it will mould up very quickly in the shelf once opened.We have the technology to store this stuff for the long term (freezer), or for a rather short term (refrigerator). We also have resealable bags (Ziploc bags). Figure it out, people!This stuff is great. You need to toast this stuff for quite a long period of time (generally at the very highest toast setting possible) before it's nice and crispy. It is otherwise very intense to consume flavour-wise if it hasn't been heated up or toasted yet. Use cream cheese, tzatziki sauce, sausages, and other cheeses like Gouda, Gruyere, or other aged cheeses and strong-flavoured cheeses. ANY strong toppings/fillings (and even some lighter ones) will complement this bread wonderfully. It's a great open-face sandwiching bread as well, and you could probably make a regular sandwich out of it, too.They are also thinly sliced, so yes, it is expected to see this happen when you start to bend it beyond its usual limits.Again, this is absolutely embarrassing to watch people call this great product a bad one when the problem almost always lies on the user, themselves. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So delicious and did NOT trigger my (severe) gluten allergy! *by on Reviewed in the United States June 4, 2025* I have looked for all-rye bead forever in local stores in US. I finally thought of trying Amazon and here it is! I am so excited to find food that does not trigger my gluten allergy and also is delicious. Even the "gluten free" breads I can buy here sometimes trigger my allergy, due to over-processing and added mystery ingredients, and they all taste like cardboard. Not this wonderful bread, which is both delicious and healthy! I read one review saying it was not good for sandwiches. Good grief, then just go buy the junk on the shelves (sorry). Each loaf has 7 thin, dense slices that work just fine for open sandwiches and such. I have eaten it plain, toasted with butter, with scrambled eggs, mashed avacados, and plan to try toasted with sardines, cream cheese with smoked salmon, etc. Another good thing is that is so nutritious and dense that it fills you up quickly. It keeps well in the fridge in an air-tight container, thus I I plan to get six loaves the next time...I would put it on auto-ship but don't trust Amazon not to throw it in a big box with other things, based on my past experience, but enough of that. If you are looking for healthy, flavorful bread that keeps well, this is it! If you have gluten allergies, try the two loaves and test. I hope you love it as much as I do. I admit that I usually do review more bad products than good ones because I expect what I buy to be good and do not review them. This bread has no pumpernickel smell or taste. It a strange shape in that the two loafs stacked appear as one loaf. The bread has the consistency of ground up cardboard that has been pressed into shape and a taste that is unpleasant while chewing this slab of whatever it really is. It only resembles pumpernickel in the color, it is dark brown.
