The guitar that Paul Smith took to his first tradeshow in 1985, the Custom 24 is the original PRS guitar. The SE Custom 24 features SE HFS and SE Vintage Bass pickups, Volume and Tone controls with a 3-way toggle, a PRS designed tremolo, bird inlays and a wide thin Neck. For 2012, the SE Custom 24 has been updated with a new Body carve and pickup control configuration. Previously the SE Custom had a flat style Body, but for 2012, the popular SE model has received a beveled top carve, more reminiscent of PRS Guitars’ original Custom 24 model. The SE’s pickup control layout for 2012 is one volume and one push/pull tone control paired with a 3-way blade switch. The bevelled top is nice, if not as`arched' as I'd hoped. The overall finish on the guitar is flawless, andat first glance, it's hard to see where PRS have cut costs from their farmore expensive big brothers. The neck is superb, with a lovely low action.Intonation is spot on, and, as it's so beautifully slim you really cancomfortably play right upto the 24th fret. The frets arenicely finished on the edges, though a little more fender than Gibsonlike. The bird inlays look great though they're obviously perloid orsomesuch, I dont care. The headstock and tuners look lovely, butpersonally I'd prefer to see PRS bigger and SE far smaller. Now to thetuners. They really need to be locking. They just dont hold it in tune theway you'd expect from a PRS at any price. I've checked they're notpinching at the nut, and used Nut Sauce on the slots, and I'me not aserious trem user, but it still goes out regularly. Having said that, they had to savemoney some where, and most people buying one of these should be prepared to swap out the tuners for lockingalternatives. Also a better Tusq-type nut. The trem although not the same one as on their dearer models, is great,very smooth, and also very sensitive. Switched on, the pickups sound good, and anyone trading up to this wouldbe pretty happy I'd imagine. There's plenty of scope from a very bright,trebly bridge pickup to the fatter neck pickup. It's easy to get pinchedharmonics in either position, though strangely harder in the middle.So, final conclusions? I think the tuners, and the pickups are where they'vesaved money.
