I am not sure, but it looks as though there is enough space to accommodate a hardback cover as well. **Q: Are the page holders sprung? Do they have power to hold open the pages of a new, thick book?** A: They are not sprung but they can hold open thick books with no trouble at all. I am really delighted with mine and use it daily for large text books. I particularly like the fact that the page holders work independently so I can use one to hold the book and have the other slightly open to help with page turning. **Q: Would I be able to annotate a textbook being held by this stand? It was a bit fiddly with the first pages but I managed and I expect the same trouble towards the end of the book but it's fine. I'd recommend it.
