Review: Near perfect for 30 bucks - This is an exceptional dagger. If you want anything nicer, you’re probably just paying for vanity features, bougie materials, and style. It is utilitarian, but that also kind of makes it cooler, because of the utility it’s designed for: putting holes in living things. All the cost was put into making it an effective dagger. Let’s not kid ourselves: this is a dagger, not a pocket knife nor a survival knife, though I did buy it just to have a quick blade when hiking... The handle is supposed to be short, because you’re supposed to hold it tight in your hand, even possibly hooking announced finger over the hilt, and so that the handle is pressed against your palm for better leverage and stability. The blade is thick, strong steel. One can see that, again, it wasn’t made to look pretty and is kind of a rough alloy, which they’ve hidden somewhat by slightly blueing the blade. The rough blueing job combined with the rough alloy mixture does help strengthen that “built-with-purpose” utilitarian vibe. It doesn’t impact its ability to sharpen and maintain an edge, though. Function over form in the best way, so that it looks like form. I bought this at the same time as their $50 tactical Bowie knife. Sharpening and honing the two let me compare the quality of steel. This dagger came out the box sharper and took six times as long to hone as the Bowie knife, a testament to its strength and ability to maintain its edge. The steel is thick and appropriately bulged down the spine for its dagger role. The blade edge is wide enough that I’m tempted to polish it (I inadvertently polished the tip while honing it needle-sharp). The balance is on point for a dagger, with the center of mass just behind the blade, with enough driving weight. It looks kind of like a throwing knife, so I think some will assume it’s throwable. I can’t throw knives, so I don’t know if it throws, but my understanding is that their center of balance should be right where the blade meets the hilt. Perhaps, if you took off the handle guards the weight would be more symmetrical. The handle is a bit rough, the blade itself being exposed down the sides and notched for grip texture. But, like I said, this is a death utility, not something you’d be working with on a project. It comes out of the holster, stabs some holes, gets wiped, goes back in the holster. It’s kind of perfect as-is. I don’t need it to be comfy, I need it to be secure in my hand, and this knife would need a ton of force to free it from my grasp. The sheathe is good quality. Basic design and utilitarian, but real, full-grain leather. The clasp on the sheath is quick and easy to open with either a thumb or a finger.
Review: Some specs for the Smith & Wesson SWF606 DUAL edged knife. - For a sub $25 knife w/leather sheath and belt clip, this knife is worth buying. The stainless steel used is a good choice for smaller knives, and the handle should be quite durable. The only flaw I can see is that the grind is slightly off the entire length of the blade which means the spine is not properly centered at the tip, off less than a millimeter. Since the blade also tapers down from it's thickness to the point, I don't believe this affects strength or functionality one bit... but you can see it. I'm a machinist, so I am comfortable making that call. Now for the stats that might help people decide. The knife is just shy of 8.8" with 4.5"long blade and 4.25" long handle, with 3.25" of it usable, max. I have large hands and I essentially have 3 fingered grip on the handle with the fourth wrapping around the lanyard loop (.53" diameter) and behind it. Because the handle is a uniform .68" thick and the full tang tapers from .95" down to .75" and back to .95", it is easy for me to have firm grip; sufficient for a small boot knife. Please note that the handle rides inboard of the full tang by about 1/16th", a feature i like and I'm sure will help with durability. The blade is just under 3/16" thick the entire length of the knife and the spine is .35" wide for 1/2 the length of the blade, then tapers to meeting at 3.2" making it somewhat heavy (6.3oz) and strong. I could see breaking the tip off with misuse (and then just grinding a new one), but I can't imagine breaking the blade short of using it as a pry bar. The edge grind is sufficiently straight and even and it comes almost sharp enough to shave my arm hairs with. The knife in the leather sheath is about 9.7" long. The sheath weighs 2.1oz, has a belt clip and is fairly simple but well made with repairable stitching, and has a metal braced snap tab. Now that you know everything about the knife, and if the weight or handle size isn't a deal breaker, just buy it. I seriously doubt that you will regret it for the $25 it costs., I know I don't.
