After reading several reviews, thought I'd try a quick expiriment with a dollar store tub and a piece of drywall I had laying around to see if center mounted or edge mounted port to the collector worked better. sucked up the same 4 gallons of dust I collected from my collector bag, floor sweepings, stuff I pulled out that plugged the screen. In the end, both center and edge kept all the stuff that would have previously plugged the screen out of the collector and resulted in the same amount of very fine dust in the collector bag. pics of both setups and the cup of dust from the center mount. The line on the cup was how much of the same fine dust I had when I ran it with the port on the outside. For me, and this setup made no difference where the port was - both worked great. I have a hole saw kit from harbor freight a while back and used the 4 inch saw to cut perfect circles. Also I just copied the template just in case I messed it up. Really didnt need it though. This was the easiest install I have ever done I think. The only negative about this is that it loses pretty much all suction when the can gets about half full. I have one on a 30 gallon attached to my big dust collector. Now im sooiled. I want one.** A: Use a reducer from the 30 gallon can to your smaller hose and tools. the reducer is cone shaped on one end and can be cut to fit the size hose you are using if the regular reducers don't fit. There are 4" reducers to several smaller sizes though for about $5k. Good luck. **Q: Can someone recommend an inexpensive barrel or drum that is airtight?** A: you will want to find a 20 Gal plastic barrel. you can find them on Craigs-list for less than 20 bucks. the barrels are airtight with a locking lid. These work awesome and I have built two. **Q: Are these available in 2.5 inch?** A: You can just buy pvc elbows and connectors from Lowe’s to do a 2-1/2” size. You might need the rubber connectors that come with two hose clamps in the plumbing section to connect to your 2-1/2” hoses. Measure your diameters before you go to the store. I did this. Works fine. **Q: Can i mount this on the side of a 55 gallon barrel or does it have to be mounted on the top? using eagle 1656mbbg straight-sided drum with metal band.** A: Just curious, why mount on the side? Also, wouldn't it make a positive difference if the input elbow dropped down about 6 inches more than the output elbow before making it's 90? You would still get cyclical action and debris would literally have to travel upward as apposed to parallel. Most of the chips, shavings, and dust end up in the drum and almost nothing makes it to the dust collection bag or filters anymore. I can vacuum my shop, collect from my planer, miter saw, table saw, sanders, you name it and almost everything ends up in the drum. I don't know if other people would rather empty a drum or re-bag their dust collectors and clean their filters, but I'd rather just dump a drum every once in a while. If you can get your hands on a cheap 55 gallon drum with a removable lid, then you're probably better off buying this than a cyclone style dust separator... unless you want to spend the extra money.
