Even with the batteries installed it's light enough to use on long traffic details. There are three settings, OFF, BLINK, STEADY ON, that are controlled by the button on the handle. My only complaint, whichbis minor, is this raised button is raised above the handle just enough that when shifting the light in your hand around it can be bumped off. The old saying about "know your equipment " comes into play here, and I got used to it, so not really a deal breaking issue.
