A small amount of pressure releases it and allows the lid to lower itself quite slowly and gently. My only criticism is that the instructions are totally baffling but a QR code will lead you to a You Tube video on how to use the template provided. Using the template is very easy so in the end it wasn't an issue. The lid on this box is substantial but one hinge was sufficient. I can't attest to the longevity as I've only just made this (Nov 2022) but so far I'm more than happy with it.
