I've had this pen for awhile now and its still great, it always works! **Q: is the gold actual gold or a gold paint?** A: Obviously, at $30, it is not actual gold. They don’t specify that it’s “gold plated”, so I doubt it’s even 14k or other gold plating, which will eventually wear off with use (especially being handled a lot), anyway. I imagine that the gold exterior, whatever it actually is, probably holds up better than gold plating anyways. I believe this company does offer genuine fine metal pens (sterling silver; gold) priced accordingly, of course. **Q: Does it ever smudge like does it let out enough ink to smudge while writing?** A: No. I've had Fisher pens for several years and smudging has never been a problem. **Q: does anyone know if you can order this inscribed with a name?** A: Hello, Yes, Fisher Pens will inscribe a name. I do not know what they charge at this time. The last time was for a group of 50 people and that was2 years ago, so I do not recall the pricing. Let me know what you want and I will inquire.
