## Description

desertcart.com : GRAYL GeoPress 24 oz Water Purifier & Water Filter Bottle, Bali Blue | Purifies & Filters Water in 8 Seconds for Hiking, Backpacking, Camping, Survival & Travel, Removes Viruses & Bacteria : Sports & Outdoors

Review: My thought about the Grayl Purifier Bottle filter system - I have always used a Sawyer purifier and it is easy and light to use. The Grayl as a storage unit is heavy. But for me it gives me peace of mind. It cleans the water so well, it gives me confidence. I do not want to get sick. I think best for Car and motorcycle or even bicycle camping, and all my kayak trips I have it with me. Not so much for section hiking. Too heavy. But I'm happy with my purchase and hope to get much use out of it. Very easy to use and easy to clean.
Review: Amazing filter...mind the quirks and you'll be a happy camper - I'm a practical person and decided this was the best filter to get since it does so much more than others. It: -Removes bacteria & viruses PLUS chemicals and microplastics. This is good for survival situations as well as camping. And with so much plastic in the environment, it's possible that even wilderness water sources have some degree of plastic and chemical contamination. This is really an "overall" solution for today's water issues--everything but desalination. -Improves taste & odor -Takes less time and grunt work than other systems -Has a super simple design and no small delicate plastic parts that could break easily on trail We took it on a backpacking trip recently that had only lake water (no springs) and on a car camping trip with river water. It absolutely makes water taste great and no one got sick. Overall it's wonderful, but it takes a bit of getting used to. Here are the quirks we discovered: 1. For people just buying it, please note that you have to unscrew the cap to press the thing down, or water will spill up and out the sides. I never read the instructions but figured that part out by trial and error. Unscrewing the cap gives a way for air to get out so you don't end up wasting water by having it come up and out the sides. It's also VERY hard to press down when the cap is screwed on. 2. It's a bit hard to press down, even with the cap unscrewed. My husband did most of it for both of us. For me to do it myself, I find it easier to set it on the ground or something pretty low and lean over it, using my body weight to press. Press slowly--if I counted to ten it was easier than if I tried to force it down. 3. It's easy to think you're done pressing, then find out you missed a bit because water leaks out the sides. Once you're done pressing, press again 2-3 times to make sure the lip of the press part is totally flush with the top of the bottle. You can test it by tilting the bottle and seeing if it drips, or looking closely. It would be easy to think the bottle was defective if it leaked and you didn't realize you hadn't pressed it all the way down. 4. Sometimes while pressing, water would spill out the sides even with the cap unscrewed. If you look closely, there's a faint fill line on the back side of the bottle, about 4/5 of the way up. If you fill exactly to this line and not above, you won't have water spilling out the sides. It took me a few tries to figure this out. I thought you had to guess how high to fill it and was carrying wasted air space in the bottle before my son noticed and pointed out the handy line. 5. As a side note, at one campground we had amazing spring water piped into the campsite. I filled the Grayl from the top (no filtering) with this awesome water to bring home. Several weeks later it still tastes fresh and sweet. The same water "soured" a bit in other containers after sitting a while. Not sure why the Grayl performed better as a storage bottle, but it did. The system is a bit heavy, but it doubles as a water bottle so it's not wasted space. And it's the only one that does everything in one. If you're on the fence, just buy this one. Once you get used to its quirks, it's unparalleled.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How long does the filters last?**
A: Grayl states 250 liters or 3 years from the first use - I bought it for my travel to 3rd world countries for 3 weeks. I drink about 4 liters a day, sometimes more when the place i am visiting is hotter than I am used to. After that trip, I did not use the filter for about 2 years - I picked it back up and it filters well enough.

**Q: anyone taken this as your only filter for multi-day backpacking? Any tips/ backup req'd? This seems less likely to break or fail than other methods.**
A: Zero moving parts. Burly design. Pretty tough to break. :)

However, common sense says, carry a backup. Those little, terrible tasting chemical tables work. So does boiling.

Happy trekking.

**Q: For salt water?**
A: No, fresh water only.

**Q: Can you fill it up with snow?**
A: I don't think this would work very well. The water you want to filter goes into the outer shell, then you push the inner shell, with the filter on the bottom, down through the water so that the water is forced up through the filter and into the inner shell. It seems as if trying to push the filter down through unmelted snow would just compact the snow into a solid mass in the outer shell, i.e., nothing would be forced up through the filter and into the inner shell. You'd need to melt the snow first.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic device, works amazingly well- but requires strength to use
*by E***O on June 18, 2026*

This is a fantastic product, but read my one concern. I took it on a canoe/camping trip and used it constantly. So much better than boiling water and drinking warm water. Now you really can drink directly from the lake or river. Turned water with sediment swirling into crystal clear, cold water. However... it takes a lot of strength to use. The best method was to put it on the ground and use your body weight to slowly press down on the water. Using my full body weight made it simpler. I also did it in the canoe, where I was only able to use my arms, and that was doable, but more difficult and took longer. I wondered if my wife would have been able to operate this. Make sure to read directions well before tossing them.
