Review: Works very well! - This tool is easy to use. I had to remove a bad plastic power steering pulley and install a new metal pulley wheel (Dorman 300-010) after market substitute on my 2006 Ford F150 4.2L pickup. The correct installer has an 8mm metric thread and this one fit it perfectly. The important thing to realize is that the tensile strength of an 8mm screw is limited. You also need to understand that most manufacturers maintain a tight tolerance for an interference (AKA friction) fit. That means it is up to the end user to get adjust the hole size in the wheel to provide a good interference fit that isn't too tight for the installer to pull on. It's very likely the pulley wheel will be too tight from the manufacturer. A Dremel tool with a cylindrical grinding attachment works well for making this adjustment. Understand that the adjustment is on the order of one ten thousandth of an inch. that's roughly 1/10th the thickness of a sheet of paper. But remember, you will only need to remove half of that thickness around the entire inside diameter to arrive at that total because your effort doubles across the diameter. So a bit of light grinding is all it requires. How can you tell if you have removed just enough or too little? That's easy. in the absence of a very accurate inside micrometer, just try pushing the wheel on by hand to start with. If it goes on to the main shaft about 1/8" - 3/16" with a firm push, you are probably close to what you want. Remember the end of the shaft is slightly tapered in most cases to assist in getting the alignment right. That part doesn't count. The interference fit needs to be very tight but not ridiculously so. If it is too tight, you stand a good chance of breaking the 8mm screw on the installer tool. This tool is very high quality high carbon steel. But it will break if you exceed its tensile strength! It probably won't twist off, it will simply snap once the tensile strength is exceeded. If you can't turn the screw with a moderate amount of force, the pulley is too tight. You need to remove it using the puller, ream it out a little more, and try again. You might wonder why the wheel is not a perfect fit. Consider the manufacturing process for the pump shaft. The answer is that with any manufacturing process there is a +/- tolerance percentage involved. You can't predict what the manufacturer's QC is on any given day. All you can do is allow for the smallest expected shaft size and provide a part that meets the required standard tolerance variations. It's the mechanics job to tweak the replacement part to fit. To all of the negative reviewers of this tool, I would say that it's just a misunderstanding of how to use the tool and what a professional mechanic is expected to know. This is a high quality tool, meant to operate correctly with proper usage. If you exceed the tolerance of the tool by using it incorrectly, any tool will break. For example, even a high quality socket wrench will break if you over torque it. This is why equipment manuals specify torque limits for bolts and screws they use.
Review: Good tool -Fair Price - Worked very well. Made my power steering pump replacement easy. The tool removed the p/s pump pulley with little effort and just as easy installing pulley on new pump. The individual pieces in thy e kit appear to be well made. Blow molded case fits nicely into tool box. This is the 5th OTC tool I’ve purchased, I’m happy with their stuff. I’m not a pro and don’t have easy access to a tool truck, OTC seems to be on par with tool truck quality.
