I do bleach them in the wash, but to the mops credit, it picks up so much filth they can look a little grey. But they ARE clean. If you're asking how long they last during a cleaning... I mop a large area like the kitchen, then I pick it up and peek under the mop to see how much I've picked up. If it's COVERED in dirt I change it, if I can still see the white of the pad I keep going. Hope that helped! **Q: Do you have to pump the handle (like a Shark) in order for the steam to release? Thank you.** A: No pumping required. Once you set the steam level (Low, Medium or High), there is continuous steam until you push the steam level button again to select "off," or unplug it.I probably should elaborate that a lot of people don't seem to realize there is a way to turn the steam off aside from unplugging the power cord. No "off" switch is probably one of the most frequent complaints I see in the reviews. The off control is the same button that controls the steam level. Push the button once for Low steam, push again for Medium steam, push again for High steam, and push it a fourth time to turn the steam OFF. So, although there is no separate off/on switch (which I don't find to be a problem at all), the mop CAN be turned off without unplugging the power cord. **Q: Can this be used on hardwood floors?** A: Well at a flooring store there was a sign saying NOT to use any STEAM on hardwood floors.....doing so will negate your factory warranty... **Q: Can Pinesol be added to the water?** A: NO!! Bissell recommends using only distilled water. Obviously those saying "yes" didn't read the User's Guide. There are multiple warnings throughout the User's Guide that comes with the mop that plainly says: "Never put descaling , aromatic, alcoholic or detergent products into the steam cleaner, as this may damage it or make it unsafe for use." That means no white vinegar, no essential oils, no cleaners like Pinesol. Nothing but water, and preferably DISTILLED water and not tap water. You run the risk of having the mop plug up and stop steaming if you add anything else to the tank...and doing so will void the valuable 2 year manufacturer's warranty you get with this mop. If you feel you must use some type of cleaner in conjunction with the steam, add a little directly to the floor so it is not going through the working components of the mop. However, just be aware that if you use cleaner (directly on the floor), you pretty much defeat the advantages of cleaning with steam, i.e., #1. Avoiding potentially harmful chemicals and fumes, #2. no rinsing and rinsing ... and rinsing (and no soapy residue left behind), and #3. not having to spend extra money on floor cleaning products. Believe me, this mop cleans so well you do not need to use cleaners, at all. The steam does it all -- loosens dirt, grime and even residue from previous products, and it sanitizes. Truly, the first time I used this mop, it removed old, dried paint splatters out of the crevices of a textured vinyl floor! You don't need to complicate things.
