The oil is absorbed into the wood fibers, and helps with water resistance and spill clean-up. John Boos recommends oiling this countertop to preserve beauty and durability. (John Boos Mystery Oil sold separately on desertcart). Each countertop is constructed with full length exterior rails and random finger-jointed interior rails. During installation, please note that an overhang of 8 inches or more (width), and 12 inches or more (length) must be stabilized with support. I use this board to support my huge 200 pound crested gecko cage (not exactly the use its meant for) however over the 2 years that it had been used as a cage mount, its done a phenomenal job and has not let me down at all.
