A: It is a smooth sliding second hand,
The clock adopts a super silent movement, so we can't hear the sound of the second hand, so it won't affect our sleep at night.

**Q: Can anyone please tell me the depth of this clock? I know it is 12" diameter. Thank you.**
A: I took my new clock to my office immediately, so, from home, I can't tell you the exact depth, but it's safe to say it is between 1 and 1/12 to 2 inches deep.  By the way, it's a fantastic clock and keeps time in sync with the atomic clock in my government building. A good purchase.

**Q: Will this operate in a hot environment? Say around 100°?**
A: I use mine in my attic and it can get pretty hot up there during the summer. No issues yet.
