I never used stainless steel plates before and was worried that they would bend once hot food is placed on them. Oh no! They are very sturdy and won’t bend. You will feel a hot dish underneath with your hands though when camping, for example. When having oily fingers, they can leave oily marks on the plates. However, soapy water takes those stains right off. The edge could be a bit higher to contain the food (we often hold the plates in our laps when camping) but then they look like dog bowls so these are good. They are large enough to serve dinner on them. They are a bit too big to serve dessert on them. For backpacking I think these would be a bit too heavy to carry. Are they suitable for a hike?** A: My scale says 10.5 oz. I personally probably wouldn't ever have a reason to bring one hiking, but you certainly could. (I'm guessing you could find a lighter option if you're worried about weight.) I don't even really use them as plates. I mostly use them as paper plate holders or trays to hold soup bowls between the kitchen and whatever room I'm eating my soup in, to catch any spillage. If I cook something on foil in the toaster oven, I will drag the foil out onto one of these and use it as a plate that doesn't need to be washed because the foil keeps it clean. All that being said, I absolutely love them and am glad I bought them.
