That, along with a slight pattern, provides a solid grip. Despite the more pliable feel, it still slides in and out of a pocket easily. The protective lip is raised above the front panel and camera lens a good amount, it should keep both well protected. The fit is snug, requiring only a little bit of wrestling to get on and off. I tried it both ways; putting on the inner and outer shells as one piece, as well as installing the inner and then the outer independently. There is a very slight bulge-out around the buttons, which you can see on the front panel. It's evident no matter how you put it on, as a one or two piece operation. It hasn't posed any problems for me thus far. The material doesn't show fingerprints, which is always a bonus. All-in-all, a really nice case for the money.
