For a year and a half I was paying a ton to have a professional colorist cover my greys. I had to schedule appointments every 3 weeks to keep my roots covered. I had issues with the professional colorist's work - she would get dye on my facial skin and it would last for days, sometimes she'd leave the color on too long and the developer would start to lighten the color making my roots look clearish red instead of dark brown.. etc. I finally gave up and bought this boxed dye. I am amaaazed. This dye actually covers my greys (some boxed dyes do not, or only do for a few washes). Also, it will temporarily stain your skin but not nearly as bad as whatever the pro colorist was using, so I don't have weird dye marks on my skin (and there is no compromise in color of my hair or longevity of the color). Lastly, the color is beautiful. I kept telling my colorist I didn't want blueish dark hair and I didn't want reddish dark hair, I just wanted a blackish color that was like a chocolate undertone. But she always made my hair either look blue or red in sunlight, very obviously dyed. This boxed dye looks like such a beautiful natural color (#10). Last note on leaving it on too long (and this is basically true of any dark dye with developer) - it will start to lighten your hair. I DO NOT keep it on for the recommended time. That is waay too long. I work very quickly to section and apply the dye from the base of my head up toward the crown. I only do the roots along my part at the very end. Then I leave it on for 10 min MAX. Sometimes closer to 8 min. I rinse it with warm water thoroughly. I get dark hair with covered greys that lasts for weeks (I use color-safe shampoo and conditioner). If you leave this on your roots for more than 10 min (which I had to do once when someone else was occupying the shower), it definitely lightens your roots. Then you get a weird grown-out look where your hair is dark but your roots are a faded reddish brown color. Not good. But again, that is true of anything with developer in it going on your roots. Ur in the end just lifting rather than say bleaching to add a more vibrant cor to ur natural sometimes with box u would use bleach then apply for this purpose same type deal only it's the developer doing it much easier and kinder to ur hair in generally but u adjust the dev # up or down based on how much u need to bleach for a box dye example but here it's dev that's trying to lighten u so med brown I use 60 and it's not healthy for ur hair by no means just a bit better compared to bleach I think my hair feels diff not as fried to b extreme a bit oversggrrsted but u get the point hopefully. If hair has been dyed too dark, you cannot simply slap a lighter color over it and hope it will lift the darker color. At most it will add a different more reddish tone but won't truly lift. If I dye hair too dark then the only solution a lot of the time is to (a) try to lift it out right after by washing with baking soda, dish detergent, etc. or (b) vitamin C wash. Some even do a bleach bath and then re-dye. It all depends on how damaged your hair is.
