It's a solid brass barrel (except for the mechanical bits inside!), so it can be engraved. Depends on where you buy or take it to one of those engraving shops. It's a hexagonal barrel, so whatever you engrave will be small to fit on the flat surface as shown by logo in the picture. Brass is relatively "soft" as a metal and should be no issue for any shop that does engraving. You may also want to search Amazon for hexagonal clips that fit this pencil (and all the Kaweco line), so you can clip it to a pocket. They're ~ $1 each and finish the unit off nicely. I have this, the ball point, and the fountain pen all in brass -not engraved, but clipped. They develop a nice patina after some period of use. Heavy, but I like it that way and fits the hand well. **Q: It looks like the cap and barrel are different colors, maybe even made of different materials. Is that correct?** A: The item is all brass. The cap is the same material and color as the rest of the pencil. What you're seeing in the pictures is the difference in the texture as the round top seems to have been milled in the shape of a cylinder, while the body is hexagonal. So, when being photoed, the light reflects differently. I can see from the picture on Amazon where you'd get the idea. You'll find this really doesn't look different when in person and the more you use it, the more the pencil will get a uniform patina as your hand, from use, and putting in/out of pocket or pencil holder for carrying, will make the unit look quite uniform. I've had mine for years, and they don't need polishing. I wipe down every once in a while as when you eat chocolate, one leaves fingerprints on the barrel:-) **Q: Does the lead sleeve retract? This is a robust little mechanical pencil you can use everyday and take anywhere with you. The pusher on top feeds out lead easily and the pencil has a good weight to it so it feels good in your hand. The pencil is long enough that there is no issues with writing with it for a long period. In time I hope it patina's as nicely as the pen I have.
