The frame is metal and the plates are plastic. The plastic plates do wiggle around a little bit inside the metal frame, but is in no danger of falling out. I like that the plates can be easily removed from the stand to cut the cake. I did not have a problem with the stand leaning when I had cakes on them. Due to the way the stand is assembled, you cannot remove the top tier and use it as a two tier stand. There is 7 3/4 inches between the plates. I bought this stand because I wanted a cake stand that didn't have a bar going down the middle.
