Review: It's a HDD with a purple sticker in 2026. - It has survived 100k+ miles, turned off while driving, in a tractor trailer going through some of the bumpiest roads of the usa, including louisville repeatedly. It hits different in a truck. Ive kept it off for 3-6 months at a time, and possibly longer, and it held data without obvious corruption. Freezing temps, hot temps.. I just need to reformat it to a larger cluster size. File integrity be damned, im not waiting hours for a few gigs. value for money is good. Hdd tech is hdd tech. You know. At least it has a high theoretical lifespan. Formatting can be done fine. At first i thought there was an issue with the drive but then i tried a different dongle and realized the drive was fine. Speed for hdd is not fabulous, and never will be, unless you run them in raid setups where you can get multiplied speed by the factor of however many drives your raid tyoe is setup for. Noise, i use it with a dongle ro a minipc right by my head. You hear some clicks, but nerds these days are usually loud mouths listening to backgroundvmusic while streaming as they do their homework, so a few clicks wont matter unless youre an asmr artist or recording studio quality soundtracks in the same room with high sensitivity mics. Its not bad. Review: Reliable Performance, Quick Resolution - I recently purchased ten Western Digital 12TB WD Purple Pro surveillance drives for an extensive security project. Out of the box, I did encounter an unexpected issue: two of the drives were dead on arrival. However, I promptly reached out to customer support and received replacements without hassle. Once installed, the drives performed flawlessly. The WD Purple Pro series is specifically engineered for surveillance environments, and it shows—these drives run quietly and efficiently, handling constant writing and heavy workloads with ease. Recording high-definition video streams from multiple cameras has been seamless, and the storage capacity is ample for long-term retention. While initial failures were disappointing, the quick and professional replacement process reassured me of Western Digital’s commitment to customer service. The performance, reliability, and peace of mind these drives provide far outweigh the minor setback at the start. ## Features - Engineered with advanced capabilities needed for high-end smart video solutions - High performance, reliability and workload capability for advanced AI-enabled recorders, video analytics appliances, deep-learning servers and cloud-based storage - Supports up to 550 TB/yr workload rate**. - Designed with tarnish-resistant components for harsh environments, and with additional robustness for multi-bay enclosures ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B0966TBDRZ | | Additional Features | Data Recovery Service | | Best Sellers Rank | #3 in Internal Hard Drives | | Brand | Western Digital | | Built-In Media | 3.5" WD Purple Pro SATA 6 Gb/s Hard Drive, Mounting Screws, Quick Install Guide | | Cache Memory Installed Size | 512 | | Color | Purple | | Compatible Devices | Server, Storage System, Video Surveillance System | | Connectivity Technology | SATA | | Customer Reviews | 4.0 out of 5 stars 502 Reviews | | Data Transfer Rate | 272 megabits_per_second | | Digital Storage Capacity | 18 TB | | Enclosure Material | Information Not Available | | Form Factor | 3.5-inch | | Global Trade Identification Number | 00718037889481 | | Hard Disk Description | Mechanical Hard Disk | | Hard Disk Form Factor | 3.5 inches | | Hard Disk Interface | Serial ATA | | Hard Disk Rotational Speed | 7200 rpm | | Hard-Drive Size | 18 TB | | Hardware Connectivity | SATA 6.0 Gb/s | | Hardware Platform | Western Digital | | Installation Type | Internal Hard Drive | | Item Dimensions L x W x Thickness | 6"L x 4"W x 1"Th | | Item Type Name | Hard Drive | | Item Weight | 1.8 pounds | | Manufacturer | Western Digital Technologies, Inc. | | Mfr Part Number | WD181PURP | | Model Name | WD Purple Pro Surveillance Hard Drive | | Model Number | WD181PURP-SPB6HY0 | | Number of Items | 1 | | Special Feature | Data Recovery Service | | Specific Uses For Product | Business, Personal | | UPC | 718037889481 | | Unit Count | 1 Count | | Warranty Description | Five year limited-warranty | ## Product Details - **Brand:** Western Digital - **Color:** Purple - **Compatible Devices:** Server, Storage System, Video Surveillance System - **Connectivity Technology:** SATA - **Digital Storage Capacity:** 18 TB - **Hard Disk Description:** Mechanical Hard Disk - **Hard Disk Form Factor:** 3.5 inches - **Hard Disk Interface:** Serial ATA - **Installation Type:** Internal Hard Drive - **Special Feature:** Data Recovery Service ## Images ![18TB WD Purple Pro Surveillance Internal Hard Drive HDD - SATA 6 Gb/s, 512 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD181PURP - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61iSDo-1aZL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Size, Style** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: Can it be installed vertical instead of horizontal inside my lorex nvr?** A: I don't see any reason why not. One plugged in and worked just fine. The other was DOA - NVR reported an error and it wouldn't spin up. Eh, no big deal, it happens, I returned it to Amazon and they sent me replacement. This one was ALSO DOA. At this point I wondered if maybe my NVR backplane had an issue, so I tested the drive in other computers; nope, still dead. I switched around my existing NVR drives, and that slot works fine. So, two dead drives out of three. I then came here to check reviews, and I see many 1-star Dead-on-Arrival reviews, with many people apparently not checking until after return period (that sucks!). If you want to take the gamble, just be sure you check your drives right away when they show up! ## Frequently Bought Together - Western Digital 18TB WD Purple Pro Surveillance Internal Hard Drive HDD - SATA 6 Gb/s, 512 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD181PURP - Western Digital 10TB WD Purple Pro Surveillance Internal Hard Drive HDD - SATA 6 Gb/s, 256 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD101PURP - Tripp Lite SMART1500LCD 1500VA Rack Mount UPS Battery Backup, 900W, 8 Outlets, PWM Sine Wave, Short Depth 2U Rackmount UPS, AVR, LCD Screen --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/327939470-18tb-wd-purple-pro-surveillance-internal-hard-drive-hdd-sata](https://www.desertcart.co.za/products/327939470-18tb-wd-purple-pro-surveillance-internal-hard-drive-hdd-sata) --- *Product available on Desertcart South Africa* *Store origin: ZA* *Last updated: 2026-10-10*
