Different kinds of charcoal will all light a little different from each other - sometimes even causing excessive sparks. Be careful, dress properly, and let the igniter do the work. What I am really mad about is the company that is selling this igniter - they pulled a "bait and switch" with me, and sent me a "used, returned" item instead of the "NEW/UNUSED" one I purchased. I am so, so tired of vendors here on Amazon pulling this stunt. I did plug it in, and it works so I am going to keep it - I bought it with reward points, so I am not out real cash (just my points which are like cash).
