Review: Very Durable and Versatile Tarp!!! - I bought the Free Soldier tarp to keep in my car in case of emergency. I’m not sure what kind of emergency I was anticipating, but I had a tarp! I have never used one to do anything but cover patio furniture for winter, but I had a tarp! I threw it in my car and never even opened it for almost a year and a half, but I had a tarp! Since buying the tarp, I’ve discovered a passion for tent camping. In watching camping videos, many people use this type of tarp for all kinds of things. Until this morning, I didn’t have a need and it continued to live in my car undisturbed. Today , I experienced my first campsite with no tree cover, and the sun was brutal! All of a sudden, I remembered the Free Soldier tarp in my car. I decided to make a sun shelter with the tarp. I had never made one, but how hard can it be? Not difficult at all since I had the right equipment with me. I grabbed the tarp, cordage, stakes, and expandable poles and created sun relief! This tarp is amazing! Part of my reason for buying this tarp was the price. It seemed reasonable at the time of purchase. Now that I’ve used it, I know the price is reasonable! The material is high quality and durable. It feels like it will last me for a long time (and I’ll be using it way more often now!). The stitching is good, seams are taped, and there are lots of tie out points and grommets around the edges and down the centerline. They all seem like they’ll absorb some abuse. Today I’m having gusts of about 20 MPH, and the tarp is handling every one of them. The size is also good for what I needed it for. I’m camping alone this weekend, and there’s room for my chair and table with room to spare. This would definitely work on those rare occasions when my wife comes along! The material of the tarp is thin, but it’s plenty thick for what I need it to do. It’s also versatile. This setup I did would also work for rain protection, an emergency shelter, or as a tent footprint in a pinch. I haven’t tested it in the rain yet, but I see no reason to believe that it won’t shed water as advertised. I also love the green color of the tarp. I don’t typically color coordinate my campsites, but this tarp looks like it belongs in the woods and compliments my other gear nicely! I’m thrilled with the Free Soldier tarp and wish I hadn’t waited so long to use it. I highly recommend this!!!

**Q: Does anyone know the actual pack weight, both with all and without the stuff-sack tent pegs?**
A: The tarp, guy lines and sack total 2.12 lbs, or 33.9 oz. Tent pegs were not included.

**Q: About being waterproof. Waterproof as "heavy rainforest rain"? or , waterproof as "water mist spray"? (by my exp it seems rated for water mist)**
A: I’ve used it during a heavy FL thunderstorm, the winds were extremely strong and occasionally a stake would be pulled out of the ground from the gusts, but the waterproofing performed very well.  It is very waterproof in my experience so far. We’ve used it in medium to heavy rain about 9 or 10 times and we’ve stayed dry every time. Only drawback is that the tarp is heavy to backpack due to its sheer size.

**Q: I am curious how this tarp compares to the kelty noah's tarp, or the chill gorilla, particularly how sturdily the grommets and loops are stitched?**
A: its actually really durable, i've use both noah's tarp and the msr thunderridge and this out performs both, easily twice as tough as a noah's tarp and a bit sturdier than thunderridge. this is just really overbuilt and stupid heavy, like its easy 2 lb 4 oz, compared to kelty and msr which are 1lb easy.

Did great for camping!!! Used it in the jungles of Okinawa Japan and the Forests of California. Its light weight and pretty easy to pack. The stakes are of decent quality as well. Cons: doesnt do well with major downpours. Also doesnt fold up as easy into the bag (its very possible just takes more effort).
