## Description

New York Times bestseller and Newbery Honor Book! A gorgeously written, hopeful middle grade novel in verse about a young girl who must leave Syria to move to the United States, perfect for fans of Jason Reynolds and Aisha Saeed. Jude never thought she’d be leaving her beloved older brother and father behind, all the way across the ocean in Syria. But when things in her hometown start becoming volatile, Jude and her mother are sent to live in Cincinnati with relatives. At first, everything in America seems too fast and too loud. The American movies that Jude has always loved haven’t quite prepared her for starting school in the US—and her new label of “Middle Eastern,” an identity she’s never known before. But this life also brings unexpected surprises—there are new friends, a whole new family, and a school musical that Jude might just try out for. Maybe America, too, is a place where Jude can be seen as she really is. This lyrical, life-affirming story is about losing and finding home and, most importantly, finding yourself.

Review: An important read! - 🤭🙌🏽 My fourth book of the year… thoroughly devoured in a few hours. 🇸🇾 Other Words for Home 🇺🇸 by Jasmine Warga. ✍️ Wow - this was such a great read and loved how it is written in verse, which makes it very accessible to Y6 and upwards. There are subtle references to conflict and the racism that Muslims face, but it’s not too violent and perfect for upper key stage two and beyond. 🧕 The story follows Jude, a fearless girl who has to leave her home in Syria and start again in America. Her brother and father stay behind, while Jude and her pregnant mum flee for safety. As the story progresses, she is repressed by those around her, but she chooses not to be ‘skety’ and to be strong. I love a strong female protagonist and adored Jude so much and her positive impact on others. Also loved Miles. 🖤 🌙 ❤️ There are so many great extracts, which I’ve included (swipe right) for you to get a snippet. Highly recommend 🧕🧕🧕🧕🧕 / 🧕🧕🧕🧕🧕

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A powerful breathtaking middle grade novel
*by K***R on 27 May 2020*

I haven't read many Middle Grade novels, but this book made me want to read much more. It's a novel written in verse, it's really short and easy to get through, and it deals with so many important things. It's a story about identity, family, and figuring out what home means to you. It's so powerful and touching. I absolutely recommend it no matter what age you are!
