The hour meter shows total hours accumulated, and the hour/tach meter shows RPM's when the engine is running. When the engine is off, the meter shows total hours accumulated. It works on any gas engine up to two cylinders and 16,000 RPM, and it can be used with fuel injection engines. Installation is easy with simple patented one wire hook-up. Use this Hour/Tach Meter to keep track of your total time on machine. Plan oil changes, valve services, clutch service, chassis lubrication, and other maintenance schedules. Review: What a great product! Simple installation and works great. - Great product! I installed this on my Suzuki DF 2.5 single cylinder, 4 cycle outboard motor so I could monitor the rpms and hours for the engine break-in protocol and later to track hours for routine maintenance intervals. I had done a lot of research and found that there are some other products out there that are difficult to install and/or inaccurate, but this Hardline product was a very simple and secure installation and is accurate. There was no adjustment required at all- I installed it and it worked. Now I can run my engine by rpm rather than guessing by half-throttle, quarter-throttle etc. and don't have to guess how many hours are on the engine for maintenance. And, the price is right. Highly recommend. In addition, Hardline advised when I asked that you can use regular 18 gauge wire of 10, 15 ft if you need to place the device further away from the engine you are monitoring. I plan to do this with my small outboard so I can monitor it more comfortably as I go through the engine break in procedure with progressive rpms on my new 2.5 hp outboard.
Review: Solid unit that appears to work. - So far, so good. I added this to a 37 ton wood splitter that has a crx 420 4 stroke motor on it. I mounted it on the plastic near the air filter, being careful not to drill into the air intake line. The RPMs were double what they should have been at idle but holding the button while in rpm mode fixed that to get to correct mode. I ran the engine for a bit to see the hour meter read 0.1. Seems good. Time will tell to see longevity. The first package I ordered only had the display unit. I returned that and got a package with display unit, sensor wire and zip tie. I cut down the sensor wire to suit my needs as the run was not very long.

**Q: Why does this only work for 2 cylinders?**
A: It works in three modes for the spark 1P1R (1 pulse of electric power thru the plug wire for every 1 revolution of the crank) ie… a two stroke motor, fires on every crank revolution… 1P2R (1 pulse of electric power thru the plug wire for every 2 rotations of the crankshaft) ie… a four stroke engine… and… 2P1R (2 pulses of electric power thru the plug wire for every 1 rotation of the crankshaft) ie… multi -spark ignition (usually CDI ignitions that require a battery to operate) 2 stroke… lastly, the hour meter doesn’t care how many rpm or strokes or pulses, it is just a cumulative timer of how long the tach has been receiving a spark signals off of the plug wire… number of cylinders doesn’t matter because all internal combustion engines will fire all cylinders in either 1 (2 strokes) or 2 (4 stroke) rotations of the crank shaft no matter what the layout is (radial, inline, V, horizontal opposing)…

**Q: Hour/ tach meter recommendations for a 3 cylinder motor?**
A: You need the HR-8062-2 model, up to 8 cylinder engines..

**Q: How is this one-wire tach different from others that have black, red & black wires? I want to use one to tune a mower, tiller & chainsaw.**
A: Just wrap the wire around the spark plug wire and that’s it, this tach comes with instructions how to calibrate it for one or two cylinders.

**Q: I purchased this. says for 4 stroke engines.has to be attached near coil. i cant to that. will it still work on my champion 3500 generator?**

Great product!
