## Description

GPS Real Time Kinematics (RTK) has mastered dialing in the accuracy of their GPS modules to just millimeters!Based on the SparkFun GPS-RTK2 designs, the SparkFun GPS-RTK-SMA raises the bar for high-precision GPS and is the latest in a line of powerful RTK boards featuring the ZED-F9P module from u-blox. The ZED-F9P is a top-of-the-line module for high accuracy GNSS and GPS location solutions including RTK that is capable of 10mm, three-dimensional accuracy. With this board, you will be able to know where your (or any object's) X, Y, and Z location is within roughly the width of your fingernail! The ZED-F9P is unique in that it is capable of both rover and base station operations. Utilizing our handy Qwiic system, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system. However, we still have broken out 0.1"-spaced pins in case you prefer to use a breadboard. We've included a rechargeable backup battery to keep the latest module configuration and satellite data available for up to two weeks. This battery helps 'warm-start' the module decreasing the time-to-first-fix dramatically. This module features a survey-in mode allowing the module to become a base station and produce RTCM 3.x correction data. Based on your feedback, we switched out the u.FL connector and included an SMA connector in this version of the board. The number of configuration options of the ZED-F9P is incredible! Geofencing, variable I2C address, variable update rates, even the high precision RTK solution can be increased to 20Hz. The GPS-RTK2 even has five communications ports which are all active simultaneously: USB-C (which enumerates as a COM port), UART1 (with 3.3V TTL), UART2 for RTCM reception (with 3.3V TTL), I2C (via the two Qwiic connectors or broken out pins), and SPI.We've also written an extensive Arduino compatible library for u-blox modules to make reading and controlling the GPS-RTK-SMA over Qwiic easy. Note: Purchase antenna separately.

Review: Great performance. Expensive, but it's justified if you need the quality. - Very good capture performance and lock-time. Good for serious applications.
Review: Basic usb-c works. I2C has flaws. - Spent a week trying the differing and dispersed documentation suggestions that I could find on the web and support forums, but ultimately established that no matter what i tweaked, cut, or downloaded, the I2C bus would eventually crash either during boot, setup, or a few GPS readings. And it stays down. Need to ground the reset pin or pull pwr, and then reboot & try setup cmds again, being ready to do it over and over again. Makes for a complicated system, as extra components are necessary, and consuming additional power. Unfortunately had done a lot of prep work anticipating that the I2C & qwiic connectors would do their job with an arduino. So far, can only use the GPS manually with the excellent U-center utility on a larger computer with usb. support. Searched for more complete and consistent specs and examples for wiring & commanding the other comm channels. None of the examples worked with my Arduinos. over the Qwicc connector I2C bus. Its the only I2C link that I've had any trouble with in 10 years. At some point, the device pulls one of the I2C lines low, blocking all comms until reset or pwr cycle. Update: Was eventually able to by lengthy experiments & watching a scope, create code that worked in ublox mode, and was stable for hours over the I2C bus. Limited success but at least with difficulty, it can be made to work with the newer faster Arduinos.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you need two of these to make it work? Or do you need an internet connection?**
A: You do not need two of these boards to work. For better accuracy, if you are not within a certain distance of a correction station, you may want to set up your own correction station with a 2nd GPS board. The board does not require an internet connection to communicate with your computer but you may want one for configuration and quick NMEA sentence viewing. But you can also connect it to a single board computer or microcontroller and add a screen if you prefer. There is a detailed hookup guide online for the board.

**Q: What is the lowest operating temperature ?**
A: Unfortunately, we have not tested the operating temperatures of the board but the module is rated Operating temperature Topr -40 - 85 °C.

**Q: Besides the antenna connector type, is there any other difference between the gps-rtk-sma and the gps-rtk2?**
A: The other main difference is that the GPS-RTK-SMA has a footprint so you can manually solder a connector for PPS to the board for your application.
From the hookup guide:
"Note: For those that need to connect a SMA connector to the PPS pin, the RTK-SMA includes a footprint so that you can manually solder the connector to the board for your application. The PPS output is helpful as a clock source correction when synchronizing equipment (not 1 Hz but in many MHz). The PPS output can be configured to output a very accurate clock which scientists use to correct less accurate, but much faster clocks. To configure, you can use the u-center to adjust The NEO-F9P's setting under View > Conviguration View > TP (TimePulse)."
