You have to loosen that knob; 'righty tighty, lefty loosey'. Or Counter clockwise to loosen. You find it a little bit of a challenge to grab the lead and pull it down, to adjust, or all the way out. It's graphite, which is slippery. I no longer have to worry about what tools are needed as the kit has pretty much everything you need. I also liked that the cost was not too pricy. Along with it being light weight and a perfect size to fit in any backpack without taking up a bunch of space.
