I apply it directly to my hip. I love this product and order it repeatedly. **Q: Is there any menthol smell?** A: No smell at all. **Q: do these contain latex?** A: Dear Nancy,I don't know, and the package lists only "iron, activated carbon, and water." HOWEVER, you stick them to your clothing, never your skin, as the instructions say. They may contain latex, but the only time they touch your skin is when you stick them on. If you're extremely allergic to latex, I guess you could use rubber gloves to put them on. In contrast to the previous answer, I have found Cura-Heat to be EXTREMELY helpful in relieving lower back/shoulder pain. Way too hot for that and you'll burn yourself too! Very easy to use. I either put it on my back on a shirt I'm wearing or put it on the back of my underwear for my lower back. It hits the spot perfectly, the pain is gone! Perfect size and not at all bulky! You can take it anywhere you go and there is no smell to it! I highly recommend this to those suffering from lost back pain. It can also be used when your menstruating. Just remember, don't put it directly on your skin!
